The Angkor Wat Temple Complex

The most enticing reason for visiting Siem Reap is to discover the wonders of the Angkor Wat temple complex, an awe inspiring world heritage site. There is a plethora of ancient temples and tropical jungle to marvel at and you will stare in wonder at the scale of Khmer kings’ vision and ambition. These behemoths of ancient design and construction are a testament to the skills of the artisans who designed and constructed them.

Explore at your own pace; enjoy one of our gourmet picnics while you sit under a shady palm before moving on to further exploration amongst an archeological spectacle unmatched in South East Asia. We offer a variety of packages from a sunset or sunrise experience to a 3 day tour with a guide to explain the history of each temple visited. Alliance would recommend a visit to Beng Melea, a mysterious temple complex taken over by the jungle. Constructed in the early 11th century by King Suryavarman II, Beng Melia has a similar construction to Angkor Wat and is found along an ancient road connecting Angkor Thom and Preah Khan.

You will feel like you are in your very own tomb raider movie wandering around these magical jungle clad ruins.

Tonle Sap

The lake and river system of the Tonle Sap is unique. This vast body of water, the largest in SE Asia, fills up every year from the giant Mekong River bringing vast numbers of fish and providing irrigation during the dry season.

Chong Khneas and Mecchrey are the floating villages at the edge of the lake closest to Siem Reap. If you want a relatively quick and easy look at the Tonle Sap a boat tour of these villages is the way to go. Should you wish to go further afield we would recommend the floating village of Kompong Pluk. Cruising down a narrow waterway you come upon a breathtaking sight, a village where the houses stand atop stilts as much as seven metres above the water. Everything lives on the water, pigs, dogs, crocodiles and people, all jockeying for space in this incredible environment. You can explore the local Wat, or continue on into the floating forests. A truly magical experience for those who see this get to witness this incredible location.

Museums

Angkor National Museum

The new flagship museum on the road to Angkor is a showcase for the sculpture and culture of the Khmer civilisation. An ultra-modern art space, this museum uses the latest technology to bring the ancient Khmer empire to life. The collection is themed by period, religion and royalty and includes the impressive Gallery of 1000 Buddhas, inspired by Preah Poan at Angkor Wat.

Cambodia Land Mine Museum & Relief Facility The Cambodia Landmine Museum has evolved from a small shack set up by a former soldier and deminer into a formal museum and charitable organisation. The museum exhibits a variety of defused mines, bombs and other ordinance as well as information on mines, demining and Cambodia’s ongoing landmine problem.

Siem Reap War Museum

This museum is set in a beautiful garden and displays a wide variety of military hardware and equipment taken from the battlefields of Cambodia and laid to rest here just a short distance from town. Heavy armor including T-54 tanks, anti-aircraft guns, artillery pieces, rocket launchers, APCs, small arms and piles of disarmed mines, bombs and small arms are on display. Local veterans from the conflict are on hand to show you around and share their experiences with you.

A Different Perspective

Seeing the temples on foot is one thing, seeing the Angkor Wat complex by air is something else. Whether you would prefer a flight over the temples by helicopter or a more open air experience in the most up to date microlite, you will enjoy an exhilarating experience and a new perspective perhaps you didn’t expect when thinking about exploring Angkor Wat! How would you like to see the temples riding a horse or on a quad bike? Maybe you would enjoy cycling around and taking things slowly? For the less energetic we have battery powered cycles to save weary limbs and sore backs. After all the excitement you can always wind down with a massage before you relax with a cocktail before dinner.
